Promote the Vote is a comprehensive voter education project sponsored by the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office. This project is designed to teach the fundamentals of our democracy to K-12 students and encourages civic responsibility. The program helps students improve their political decision-making abilities and increase their interests in current issues.
PTV includes a statewide mock election, student competitions, a complete voter education curriculum and special events designed to recognize students and their teachers.
Tightly aligned with the Mississippi Social Studies Framework and developed in cooperation with the Mississippi Department of Education, PTV’s curriculum consists of voter education lesson plans and activities developmentally appropriate and unique to each grade level. Along with the lessons, the PTV Mock Election allows students to experience voting for official statewide candidates in a simulated election prior to the actual General Election. Ballots are provided online by the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office, and election results are tallied, announced statewide and posted on the PTV Web page, www.sos.ms.gov/ptv.
Promote the Vote provides students with a variety of ways to demonstrate their understanding of, and appreciation for, the voting privileges and responsibilities afforded to them as American citizens.
