Know before you Give: Check your Charity this Holiday Season
Jackson, Miss.—Be smart where you donate your dollars this holiday season by checking your charity with the Secretary of State’s Office.
“The holidays can bring out the best and worst in people,” says Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann. “Check your Charity this holiday season before you make a donation. Make sure your hard earned dollars are spent on the cause you support.”
Charities must be registered with the Secretary of State’s Office to solicit funds in the State of Mississippi. Each year, the Secretary of State’s office publishes a Report on Charitable Organizations in Mississippi. This report outlines the financial information of charities registered in the State, in addition to the percentage of charitable funds actually spent by a charity for its charitable purpose.
The Better Business Bureau recommends at least 65% of total expenses of a charitable organization should be spent on program activities directly related to the organization’s purpose.
“Mississippians are some of the most generous in the nation. Make sure your generosity is not abused this holiday season.” says Secretary Hosemann.
A copy of the Report on Charitable Organizations is available on the Secretary of State’s website by visiting our website at http://www.sos.ms.gov/links/sec_char/2013%20Charity%20Report.pdf.
