The Policy and Research Division’s mission is to develop and promote business laws, rules, and regulations in Mississippi that are well-conceived, clear, up-to-date, fair, and supportive of economic development.
The Division pursues this mission by conducting research on key business issues and facilitating the work of the volunteer panels of Mississippians selected by the Secretary of State to study and recommend improvements in specific areas of state law. From the research findings and study group recommendations, the Division develops legislative proposals and works with lawmakers to pass the legislation. Since 2008, over 20 of these proposals have been enacted into law.
Together with the Study Groups, the Division has addressed a broad range of topics, including corporate law, debtor and creditor law, economic development, intellectual property, land use, nonprofit and charitable organizations, public finance, rural water associations, securities, tax, trademarks, and trusts and estates.
The Division also helps develop policy initiatives at the request of other state agencies, and provides legal advice to the Secretary of State.
